If you’re already familiar with the cockle-warming condiment known as chilli jam, you may well have been tempted to experiment with its addition to one or two savoury dishes without realising just how deliciously versatile this sweet and spicy sauce really is.

Well now you’re in for a treat because in this post we’ve rustled up a few simple suggestions for how chilli jam can bring a touch a magic to everything from pizza to pasta, chicken to cheese, Bolognese to bacon sandwiches, dips, marinades, cake mixes, drinks – the list goes on.

What is chilli jam?

The name suggest that this is a spicy, sticky-sweet preparation where the ingredients will usually be cayenne, red, or habanero chilies, sugar, vinegar and a gelling agent like pectin. Other ingredients might also be onions, garlic, ginger and tomatoes.

Its origin may have derived from a Thai sweet and spicy chilli paste called nam prik pao, often used in Thai cooking to add a distinctive flavour to food.

The heat level will depend on the type of chilli and the amount used. Habanero chillis, for instance, are a very hot variety that feature in many hot and spicy foods. More than simply a hot sauce, chilli jam is both thicker and sweeter because of the sugar, which is precisely what makes it so good for spreading.

How to use chilli jam

Whether you just slather it over your sizzling burger, mix it into your stir fry or use it as a glaze for so many dishes, you’re sure to warm to the delicious difference this jam brings to the table.

Roast meats: Brush over roast pork, grilled beef or spare ribs to create a hot, sweet glaze. Coat chicken wings with chilli jam for a simple and easy to make dinner. (Try it on your veggies too!)

Sauce/Glaze: Stir a good spoonful of chilli jam into pasta sauces, chilli con carne, Beef Brisket, or to give gravy a spicy kick. Try our delicious recipe for a succulent Sweet Chilli Beef Brisket.

Sandwiches: Spread on a wide range of cold sandwiches. Fabulous with camembert. Gorgeous added to grilled cheese and ham toasties.

Dips: Use with cream cheese and coriander dip, or as a sticky-sweet dip for mini scotch eggs or sausage rolls.

Traybakes: Mix chilli jam and soy sauce in a large bowl, add chicken pieces and toss to coat, then traybake with shallots and coriander.

Mash: Mix in with mash as a spicy accompaniment to fish dishes, or as a great new way to liven up bubble and squeak!
